Since the dawn of mankind, we have been working on ourselves, to improve our health to increase our lifespan and to overcome natural diseases. Through medical science we come a long way from where we started, even if you look through the medical history from a hundred years ago, the radical breakthroughs in medicine and surgery with the help of modern science will amaze you.

In surgery, the most important thing after the surgeon himself is his equipment’s. Medical equipment in Malaysia when compared to the medical equipment to a hundred years ago looks something out of a fiction movie. Surgical instruments from a hundred years ago look like they were made to torture someone, even our modern-day hardware tools are a little less scary than those saws and scalpels.

With the help of modern science our equipment is not only more precise but a lot more disinfectant. Here are a few medical advancements we have seen in the last hundred year:

  • The Laser Scalpel :

It is a scalpel for surgery, cutting or ablating living biological tissue by the energy of laser light. In 1960, the first laser was successfully tested and shortly after that, it changed the field of ophthalmology completely. With this technology in 1964, the first laser scalpel was invented and its precision allowed it to be used extensively in complex and highly delicate surgeries.

  • The Portable Defibrillator

A defibrillation is an emergency treatment for life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias. A defibrillator delivers a dose of electric current to the heart known as the counter shock in order to depolarize the heart muscles. The natural pacemaker then re-establishes a normal sinus rhythm. The first portable defibrillator was invented in 1960.

  • The Jarvik Heart

The Jarvik 7 is a device that was made to temporarily replace a human heart for a patient waiting for a transplant. It was invented by a scientist named Robert Jarvik in 1982.

  • Balloon catheter

A Balloon catheter is a type of thin tube with an inflatable balloon at its tip. The tip can be inflated to open a narrow passage or opening within the body. It was invented in 1963 and soon became an industry standard. It was the first device in medical history that allowed for a continuous draining of the bladder which can be quite crucial during a surgery.

  • CT Scanner:

A computed tomography (CT) scan uses X-rays to make detailed pictures of your body structure. Doctors use a CT scan to study areas of the body. It was invented in 1971 and since then has been the most sophisticated imaging tool used to screen and diagnose human body of an illness.

In addition to these devices, there have been plenty more inventions in the last hundred years which have been a crucial breakthrough in medical advancements.

With all this technology and advancements there is bound to be a group of people who will try to use it illegally for the wrong intentions. To avoid this medical equipment in Malaysia can only be bought and sold to people with a permit to buy or sell this equipment. All these advancements were made for the betterment of humanity and using them to harm someone for a little profit would be a huge step backward.
